Overview
This guide applies to recreational vessels visiting Tonga for private use. Tonga Customs’ private-vessel process covers boats used personally and their normal accessories and equipment. Vessels carrying passengers for payment or industrial/commercial cargo follow different procedures.

Pre-arrival reporting
Tonga Customs requires private vessels to submit an arrival notice at least 24 hours before arrival. Use the private-vessel reporting channel published by Customs and confirm receiving arrangements with the intended port.

Immigration
Tonga’s official entry guidance generally requires visitors’ passports to be valid for at least six months and distinguishes visa arrangements by passport nationality. Before sailing, yacht crew should confirm available visas, permitted stay and supporting documents with Immigration for the intended port.

Vessel customs
Tonga Customs says private-use vessels may apply under its temporary-admission procedure. They generally must be re-exported within four months; Customs may approve an extension of eight months, for a maximum total of 12 months.

Biosecurity
Tonga Customs’ small-craft arrival notice asks for the number and type of animals aboard and where they were loaded. The passenger declaration separately lists food, animals and animal products, plants and plant products, soil and some outdoor equipment. Confirm specific permits and handling requirements with quarantine authorities before arrival.
Restricted items
Tonga Customs classifies firearms, ammunition and explosives as restricted imports requiring the relevant permit. Cash of TOP 10,000 or more, or equivalent, must be declared as required by Customs.

Port procedures
Confirm the arrival reporting location, waiting berth and order of agency inspections with Tonga Customs and the port before arrival.
Crew report (recounted by Noonsite, not an official rule): Visiting crew have said that after submitting forms and having documents checked in Neiafu, they were asked to return to the vessel and wait for quarantine staff. Follow the port’s instructions on the day.

Fees and departure
Tonga Customs uses Form C15 for departure clearance. It asks for departure location, next foreign port, vessel and crew details. Once cleared, proceed directly to the next foreign port listed on the certificate. Customs says arrival/departure clearance during normal office hours is free; confirm port charges and out-of-hours services separately with the port and Customs.
