Scope
Swedish customs rules for pleasure boats distinguish residence, vessel use and length of stay. Customs exemptions and Schengen border checks for people are separate matters.

Mga daungan ng pagpasok at pag-alis
Current Swedish Police maritime-border rules say pleasure boats travelling to or from the EU external border must use designated border-crossing ports. The list is maintained under Police regulation FAP 272-2 (PMFS 2026:5); check the current list and opening information before departure.

Paunang abiso bago dumating
Pleasure boats entering or leaving Sweden across the EU external border must complete the Police vessel/persons arrival/departure form. It may be submitted in advance to the Police or Coast Guard and must be submitted by the required time at the designated border point. There is no general fixed advance-notice period; use of a non-designated point or arrival outside opening hours requires advance permission.

Imigrasyon
Immigration
For every person, confirm with the Swedish receiving authority passport validity, visa or advance permission based on nationality, eligibility to arrive by sea, permitted stay and arrangements for crew changes or leaving the vessel. Do not generalize an airport visa on arrival, cruise-group facilitation or one nationality’s travel account into a visa exemption for all private-yacht visitors. Vessel stay and personal immigration status are assessed separately. No general visa-free entitlement is confirmed here.
Important 2026 update | European Entry/Exit System (EES): From 10 April 2026, EES is fully operational at the external border crossing points of the 29 participating countries. Eligible non-EU short-stay travellers may need to register passport details, a facial image/fingerprints and entry/exit times. Exemptions apply; the vessel’s flag alone does not determine the requirement. On arrival by private yacht, confirm the procedure with the actual receiving border port. This does not mean every Swedish port can provide direct clearance.
ETIAS status (3 November 2026): The EU says ETIAS is not yet operational and is not accepting applications; it is not currently a travel authorization that must be purchased. Check again once an implementation date is announced.

Vessel customs
A privately used pleasure boat owned by a person resident outside the EU and brought into the EU under its own power for tourism may be exempt from customs arrival notification, subject to the page’s conditions, when its total stay in the EU does not exceed 18 months. EU residents using a non-EU-registered boat, stays beyond the period and winter storage in Sweden should be discussed with Customs.
EU temporary admission for vessels (Temporary Admission; separate from people’s stay limits): Qualifying privately used yachts registered outside the EU customs territory and used mainly by qualifying non-EU residents can generally be used temporarily within the EU customs territory for 18 months without customs duty/import VAT. If conditions are not met, the vessel is used commercially or it is not re-exported before the period ends, taxes may become due. This is not an 18-month visa for people.

Quarantine at biosecurity
As an EU member, Sweden applies EU rules on animal and plant products brought by travellers from outside the EU: meat and dairy are generally prohibited; limited quantity/packaging exceptions apply to some fish and foods; plants, fruit and vegetables, and seeds generally require a phytosanitary certificate, with a few fruit exceptions. These rules cover goods carried by people and are not vessel quarantine procedures. Confirm onboard stores and pets with Swedish Customs/the Board of Agriculture.

Restricted and prohibited items
Restricted items aboard, commercial goods or goods exceeding traveller allowances may still need to be declared; an exemption from vessel arrival notification does not mean all goods are duty-free.

Mga proseso sa daungan
Yachts crossing Sweden’s external border must use a designated border port during its published opening hours. Use of a non-designated location or arrival outside those hours requires advance permission from the Police or Coast Guard under the rules. Check the current port list, hours and forms.

Bayarin at pag-alis
Fees and departure
The 18-month period starts when the vessel enters the EU and requires the vessel to leave the EU when it expires; leaving Sweden alone is not enough. EU vessels returning after leaving the customs territory should consider carrying proof of Union status.
