Pangkalahatang-ideya
Spain is a Schengen member and part of the EU customs territory. Third-country nationals must be checked at an applicable external-border crossing point. Temporary admission of non-EU private yachts is governed separately by EU customs rules and depends on the owner’s residence, vessel registration and use.

Spain carries out external-border checks on recreational vessels arriving from outside the Schengen Area. Vessels should use a designated border inspection port. If an exception requires proceeding to a non-border port, obtain port-authority permission in advance and submit the people-on-board list so the nearest designated border point can be notified and arrange inspection.

When sailing from outside Schengen or toward a destination outside Schengen, contact a port with the relevant border-check facilities in advance to confirm crew lists, vessel details and reporting channels. The official port directory is not a yacht-specific list of ports of entry. This review did not verify a nationwide advance-notice period or a requirement to hire an agent.

A Spanish yacht-service provider advises that traveller border records such as EES should be handled at the actual port. An EU vessel flag does not determine the entry status of non-EU people aboard.
Important 2026 update | European Entry/Exit System (EES): From 10 April 2026, EES is fully operational at the external border crossing points of the 29 participating countries. Eligible non-EU short-stay travellers may need to register passport details, a facial image/fingerprints and entry/exit times. Exemptions apply; the vessel’s flag alone does not determine the requirement. On arrival by private yacht, confirm the procedure with the actual receiving border port. This does not mean every Spanish port can provide direct clearance.
ETIAS status (3 November 2026): The EU says ETIAS is not yet operational and is not accepting applications; it is not currently a travel authorization that must be purchased. Check again once an implementation date is announced.

Vessel customs
Vessel document preparation: have registration/flag documents, proof of ownership or owner’s authorization, insurance, previous-port clearance and an inventory of items on board ready. Ask Spanish Customs whether temporary importation, keeping the vessel in the country, repairs, crew changes, sale or commercial use require additional procedures. No general duty-free period or guarantee requirement for all foreign vessels has been verified; permission to berth is not customs clearance.
EU temporary admission for vessels (Temporary Admission; separate from people’s stay limits): Qualifying privately used yachts registered outside the EU customs territory and used mainly by qualifying non-EU residents can generally be used temporarily within the EU customs territory for 18 months without customs duty/import VAT. If conditions are not met, the vessel is used commercially or it is not re-exported before the period ends, taxes may become due. This is not an 18-month visa for people.

Quarantine at biosecurity
As an EU member, Spain applies EU rules on animal and plant products brought by travellers from outside the EU: meat and dairy are generally prohibited; limited quantity/packaging exceptions apply to some fish and foods; plants, fruit and vegetables, and seeds generally require a phytosanitary certificate, with a few fruit exceptions. These rules cover goods carried by people and are not vessel quarantine procedures. Declare and confirm onboard stores and animals with Spanish Customs/agricultural health authorities.

As an EU member, Spain applies EU wildlife-trade controls: protected species and products may require advance CITES/EU permits. Cross-border movement of firearms and ammunition is subject to the EU licensing framework and Spanish national rules. Do not rely solely on a permit issued in the country of origin; obtain written confirmation from Spanish Customs and the relevant licensing authority before departure.

Mga proseso sa daungan
Spain’s 2023 maritime navigation regulations state that ordinary private recreational vessels generally do not need vessel-by-vessel prior maritime dispatch authorization, but must still provide information required by other authorities. Yachts arriving from outside Schengen must separately comply with external-border requirements. Calling at a non-border port requires port-authority permission and arrangements for people to be inspected.

Spain’s Law on State Ports and the Merchant Navy provides for a port-use charge for recreational vessels (T-5). Port charges depend on the facilities used and the applicable calculation rules; consult the port authority’s current published tariff. There is no single yacht departure total that applies across all ports. Port charges are separate from any import-tax relief that may apply under EU temporary admission. Qualifying vessels may receive full relief from import duty under temporary admission; confirm eligibility, declarations and exit requirements with Customs and the receiving port.
