Overview

Official source linked Checked · 2026-11-04

Slovenia is a Schengen member. Yachts arriving from outside Schengen must follow external-border rules for person checks; ports such as Koper use a maritime reporting system to coordinate authorities. Port information does not establish nationwide yacht customs rules; check vessel goods and temporary admission separately under EU customs rules.

Slovenia’s police directory lists maritime external-border crossing points, including the seaports of Koper, Piran and Izola. Vessels from third countries should use a border crossing point as directed by police. The directory is a list of border points and does not guarantee that each port offers private-yacht clearance. Confirm vessel acceptance, hours and appointments before departure.

Pre-arrival reporting

For arrival from outside Schengen, contact the designated border point and receiving port in advance to confirm crew lists, vessel information and reporting methods. Koper’s NEO system is used by relevant authorities to receive vessel reports. No uniform advance-notice period or online-agent requirement for all yachts has been verified.

Third-country nationals need a valid passport and, if their nationality requires one, a valid visa. Sea arrivals across the Schengen external border remain subject to border checks; routine travel within Schengen is different.

Important 2026 update | European Entry/Exit System (EES): From 10 April 2026, EES is fully operational at the external border crossing points of the 29 participating countries. Eligible non-EU short-stay travellers may need to register passport details, a facial image/fingerprints and entry/exit times. Exemptions apply; the vessel’s flag alone does not determine the requirement. On arrival by private yacht, confirm the procedure with the actual receiving border port. This does not mean every Slovenian port can provide direct clearance.

ETIAS status (3 November 2026): The EU says ETIAS is not yet operational and is not accepting applications; it is not currently a travel authorization that must be purchased. Check again once an implementation date is announced.

Vessel customs

Official source checked Checked · 2026-11-03

Vessel document preparation: have registration/flag documents, proof of ownership or owner’s authorization, insurance, previous-port clearance and an inventory of items on board ready. Ask Slovenian Customs whether temporary importation, keeping the vessel in the country, repairs, crew changes, sale or commercial use require additional procedures. No general duty-free period or guarantee requirement for all foreign vessels has been verified; permission to berth is not customs clearance.

EU temporary admission for vessels (Temporary Admission; separate from people’s stay limits): Qualifying privately used yachts registered outside the EU customs territory and used mainly by qualifying non-EU residents can generally be used temporarily within the EU customs territory for 18 months without customs duty/import VAT. If conditions are not met, the vessel is used commercially or it is not re-exported before the period ends, taxes may become due. This is not an 18-month visa for people.

Biosecurity

Official source checked Checked · 2026-11-04

As an EU member, Slovenia applies EU rules on animal and plant products brought by travellers from outside the EU: meat and dairy are generally prohibited; limited quantity/packaging exceptions apply to some fish and foods; plants, fruit and vegetables, and seeds generally require a phytosanitary certificate, with a few fruit exceptions. These rules cover goods carried by people and are not vessel quarantine procedures. Declare and confirm onboard stores and animals with Slovenian Customs/veterinary authorities.

Restricted items

Official source linked Checked · 2026-11-04

As an EU member, Slovenia applies EU wildlife-trade controls: protected species and products may require advance CITES/EU permits. Cross-border movement of firearms and ammunition is subject to the EU licensing framework and Slovenian national rules. Do not rely solely on a permit issued in the country of origin; obtain written confirmation from Slovenian Customs and the relevant licensing authority before departure.

Port procedures

As a Schengen member, Slovenia requires yachts crossing the maritime Schengen external border to cooperate with border checks. The EU Schengen Borders Code allows vessel checks at arrival/departure ports, designated areas or aboard the vessel; the master must have crew and passenger lists ready. Recreational vessels travelling within Schengen generally follow different checks but may still be subject to risk-based inspections. Confirm reporting, customs and port formalities with the actual port of arrival.

Fees and departure

No uniform Slovenian border-clearance tariff for private yachts was found in this review. Berthing, port services, pilotage, overtime and agent services are charged separately under port rules. Confirm fees and departure formalities with the actual port and border authorities before leaving.
