Oversikt
Netherlands yacht entry rules distinguish travel within Schengen from crossing an external Schengen border. On an external-border crossing, submit the required list of people aboard and use an official border crossing point. Recreational-craft reporting rules have an exception for vessels transiting Dutch territorial waters without entering a Dutch port. Use the list published by the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee to check ports and opening hours. Goods aboard, plants/animals, temporary vessel import and fees are governed separately by EU and Dutch rules.

Inn- og utreisehavner
Recreational craft arriving from or departing to a non-Schengen country must be inspected at an official border crossing point and follow its opening hours. If a breakdown, urgent medical situation or severe weather prevents use of a border point, the vessel may enter another port, but must inform the port, present crew and passenger lists, and ask the port to notify the nearest border authority.
Forhåndsmelding før ankomst
Whenever crossing an external Schengen border, the master of recreational craft must submit a crew and passenger list as required. An arrival list must be submitted no later than 24 hours before arrival; if the voyage is shorter than 24 hours, submit it no later than departure from the previous port. If the destination is not yet known or changes en route, submit as soon as the information becomes available. A departure report must be submitted at least three hours and no more than three days before the expected external-border crossing. This recreational-vessel reporting rule does not apply when merely transiting Dutch territorial waters without entering a Dutch port. Check the current border-authority page for the form and submission channel.

Crew and passenger entry
For each person, confirm with the Dutch receiving authorities passport validity, visa or prior authorization according to nationality, eligibility to arrive by sea, permitted stay dates, and arrangements for crew changes and disembarkation. Visa-on-arrival rules for air passengers, cruise-ship group arrangements or one nationality's travel account must not be generalized to everyone on a private yacht. Vessel stay and personal immigration permission are assessed separately. No general visa-free assurance is given here.
Important 2026 update | European Entry/Exit System (EES): From 10 April 2026, EES is fully operational at the external borders of the 29 countries using the system. Eligible non-EU short-stay travellers may need to register passport details, facial image/fingerprints and entry/exit times. Exemptions apply, and the vessel's flag alone does not determine the outcome. On a private-yacht arrival, confirm how processing works with the actual border-reception port. This does not mean every port in the country can provide direct clearance.
ETIAS status (3 November 2026): The EU says ETIAS is not yet operational and is not accepting applications; it is not currently a travel authorization that must be purchased. Check again when an implementation date is announced.

A private yacht may qualify for temporary admission in the EU customs territory, generally with full relief from import duties, if it is registered outside the EU and owned by a person established or resident outside the EU, among other conditions. A yacht can generally be used under temporary admission for 18 months. Customs may require a prescribed route, oral or written declaration, or guarantee. Temporary admission is an EU customs-territory procedure, not a separate Dutch stay permit. Eligibility depends on vessel registration, owner and actual use; confirm with Dutch Customs.

Karantene og biosikkerhet
When arriving from outside the EU, meat and dairy in travellers' personal baggage generally may not be brought into the EU; check the EU list for specific exceptions and quantity limits. Most plants, plant products and planting materials require a phytosanitary certificate, with exceptions for certain listed fruit. These are personal-baggage rules and do not replace specific requirements for food stores, animals or vessel waste. The master should confirm vessel-stores declarations and quarantine arrangements with the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) and the actual port.

Forbudte og begrensede varer
Firearms and ammunition entering or leaving the Netherlands generally require advance Dutch government authorization. Dutch Customs says goods without required authorization may be seized; permits/approvals are handled by the Central Import and Export Office (CDIU). CITES-protected animals, plants and their products may also require permits. Personal use, locked storage or not landing the goods does not automatically create an exemption. Before carrying them, confirm vessel declaration requirements with CDIU, Customs and border authorities.

As a Schengen member, the Netherlands requires yachts crossing an external Schengen sea border to cooperate with border checks. The EU Schengen Borders Code allows vessel inspections at arrival/departure ports, designated areas or aboard, and requires the master to have crew and passenger lists ready. Recreational vessels travelling within the Schengen Area generally follow different inspection rules but may still be subject to risk-based checks. Confirm reporting, customs and port procedures with the port of arrival.

Fees and departure
As of 4 November 2026, Noonsite's Netherlands clearance summary reports no national vessel-clearance fee for arrivals/departures, although canal use may incur charges. This is third-party cruising information, not an official Dutch fee schedule; no official rate confirming a uniform national private-yacht clearance total was found in this review. Confirm berth, marina services, bridge/lock or canal-transit fees with the facility and authority concerned.
Dutch Customs says a non-EU resident making a short visit with a pleasure craft may qualify for temporary relief from customs duty and VAT, although Customs may require a guarantee. This is vessel customs treatment and does not mean berthing or services are free. Complete applicable border reporting before departure.
Verification status: Third-party source only. The claim that there is no national vessel-clearance fee was not supported by an official tariff found here. Confirm actual charges with the port used.
