The Jamaica Tourist Board's yachting guide recommends that international arrivals clear in Kingston, Montego Bay or Port Antonio. The vessel and crew should complete customs, immigration and quarantine inspection before proceeding elsewhere on the island or going ashore. Customs guidance says to have a complete crew list, vessel registration and details of goods ready; customs officers may board to inspect and confirm clearance. Foreign yachts planning to cruise along Jamaica's coast must also obtain a Cruising Permit from the Maritime Authority of Jamaica. Its guide lists valid vessel registration, border-authority entry clearance and crew identity checks among the basic requirements.

Every crew member and passenger must present a valid passport or other acceptable travel document to Jamaica's immigration authority. Anyone requiring a visa based on nationality and purpose of travel must hold a valid visa. PICA's general entry requirements also include a completed and signed Immigration/Customs C5 form, submitted online or on paper. The Jamaica Tourist Board's yacht guide says yachts must provide a crew list and each person's passport/applicable visa; an immigration officer decides the permitted stay for each person. To extend a stay, apply to PICA before the current permission expires. Do not generalize visa-free periods for certain nationalities or airport/cruise arrangements to all yacht crew.

Vessel customs

After customs and immigration clearance, a yacht must also obtain a cruising permit; the vessel registration must remain valid throughout the permit period. The guide lists six months for a standard permit and a one-year bilateral arrangement for US-registered recreational vessels. Confirm the current rules applicable to the vessel's flag state.

Jamaica's agricultural authorities require declarations of foods of animal origin. Some meats, dairy products, pet foods, live animals and other animal products require a veterinary import permit in advance, depending on category and country of origin. Plants, plant products and other regulated items may also require a phytosanitary permit. Official pages concern personal/non-commercial imports and do not establish the complete quarantine rules for stores aboard a vessel. Declare food, plants, animals and pets aboard and confirm vessel-specific requirements with port health and agricultural quarantine authorities.

Jamaica Customs says items such as fireworks, firearms and medicines may require authorization from the responsible agency before import; its example list is not exhaustive. Weapons, ammunition, flares, bows/crossbows and other controlled items aboard a yacht may also be subject to rules such as the Firearms Act. Do not assume a permit from the vessel's flag state allows possession or going ashore in Jamaica. Confirm with Jamaica Customs and the national security authority before sailing, and declare items accurately.

Visiting yachts should complete entry formalities at a designated clearance port before proceeding to other anchorages. The Maritime Authority also has an application system for yacht/cruise permits. Confirm crew declarations, departure documents and the scope of the application with the intended port and responsible authorities.

Fees and departure

A cruising permit fee applies; payment of an arrival fee does not remove the permit requirement. The linked guide is an older version, so its fee figures are not presented here as a confirmed current quotation.
