Italy applies the EU temporary-admission scheme for private yachts. A resident outside the EU customs territory may temporarily use a non-EU-registered yacht for private purposes, generally for up to 18 months, subject to eligibility and use restrictions. Confirm the owner's residence, vessel's flag and intended use with customs.

Noonsite's Italy yacht guide, updated in June 2026, provides port information by coastal region and notes that customs, immigration and port services vary. Confirm that the intended port can handle the required border formalities. Being listed as a yacht port does not by itself establish that it can clear the vessel.

Pre-arrival notification

Do not treat private use and charter operations as having the same declaration, VAT or temporary-import requirements. First confirm the rules based on the vessel's flag, usual residence and actual use.

Crew and passenger entry

For each person, confirm with the Italian receiving authorities passport validity, visa or prior authorization according to nationality, eligibility to arrive by sea, permitted stay dates, and arrangements for crew changes and disembarkation. Visa-on-arrival rules for air passengers, cruise-ship group arrangements or one nationality's travel account must not be generalized to everyone on a private yacht. Vessel stay and personal immigration permission are assessed separately. No general visa-free assurance is given here.

Important 2026 update | European Entry/Exit System (EES): From 10 April 2026, EES is fully operational at the external borders of the 29 countries using the system. Eligible non-EU short-stay travellers may need to register passport details, facial image/fingerprints and entry/exit times. Exemptions apply, and the vessel's flag alone does not determine the outcome. On a private-yacht arrival, confirm how processing works with the actual border-reception port. This does not mean every port in the country can provide direct clearance.

ETIAS status (3 November 2026): The EU says ETIAS is not yet operational and is not accepting applications; it is not currently a travel authorization that must be purchased. Check again when an implementation date is announced.

Vessel customs

IYBA's 2026 guidance says the Italian Customs Agency updated the temporary-admission process for non-EU private and commercial yachts. A change in use may require Form 71-01 and customs discharge/re-entry formalities.

EU vessel customs temporary admission (Temporary Admission; separate from a person's stay): A qualifying privately used yacht registered outside the EU customs territory and used mainly by an eligible resident outside the EU may normally be used temporarily within the EU customs territory for 18 months with relief from customs duty/import VAT. If the eligibility conditions are not met, the yacht is put to commercial use or it is not re-exported on time, taxes may become due. This is not an 18-month visa for people aboard.

Italian Customs says transport of firearms, firearm parts and ammunition must comply with public-security rules. A transport permit, European Firearms Pass and permission from authorities at the destination or transit points may be required. Before departure, confirm required documents with local police and customs. Do not take weapons ashore or transport them without authorization. Public guidance does not specifically explain how sealed weapons aboard visiting yachts are handled; confirm declaration and storage requirements with the arrival port.

As an EU member and part of the Schengen Area, Italy requires yachts crossing an external Schengen sea border to cooperate with border checks. The EU Schengen Borders Code allows vessel inspections at arrival/departure ports, designated areas or aboard, and requires the master to have crew and passenger lists ready. Recreational vessels travelling within the Schengen Area generally follow different inspection rules but may still be subject to risk-based checks. Confirm reporting, customs and port procedures with the port of arrival.
