Iceland Customs requires internationally voyaging vessels to enter and leave through officially designated customs ports. The list includes Reykjavík, Hafnarfjörður, Ísafjörður, Akureyri and Seyðisfjörður, among others. The Icelandic Coast Guard also provides an arrival-report form for yachts and small vessels; its vessel-reporting guidance requires applicable vessels to submit arrival information in advance as specified. People aboard must also meet Schengen border and visa requirements applicable to their nationality. Before departure, confirm with customs, the Coast Guard and the port whether the yacht can complete all clearance there, and check reporting deadlines and submission methods.

A Noonsite yacht-arrival update from August 2024 says foreign vessels should report to Iceland Customs at least 24 hours in advance. At about 30 nautical miles offshore, the Coast Guard may request the vessel name and flag, persons aboard, previous and next ports, and estimated time of arrival. This is a recent cruising report/third-party guide. Confirm current requirements with Iceland Customs and the Coast Guard before departure.

Crew and passenger entry

For each person, confirm with the Icelandic receiving authorities passport validity, visa or prior authorization according to nationality, eligibility to arrive by sea, permitted stay dates, and arrangements for crew changes and disembarkation. Visa-on-arrival rules for air passengers, cruise-ship group arrangements or one nationality's travel account must not be generalized to everyone on a private yacht. Vessel stay and personal immigration permission are assessed separately. No general visa-free assurance is given here.

Important 2026 update | European Entry/Exit System (EES): From 10 April 2026, EES is fully operational at the external borders of the 29 countries using the system. Eligible non-EU short-stay travellers may need to register passport details, facial image/fingerprints and entry/exit times. Exemptions apply, and the vessel's flag alone does not determine the outcome. On a private-yacht arrival, confirm how processing works with the actual border-reception port. This does not mean every port in the country can provide direct clearance.

ETIAS status (3 November 2026): The EU says ETIAS is not yet operational and is not accepting applications; it is not currently a travel authorization that must be purchased. Check again when an implementation date is announced.

Iceland Customs advises that imports of plants, animals, food and related items must comply with the relevant quarantine and permit rules. Live animals require advance permission from the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority and must meet quarantine requirements. Plants generally require a phytosanitary certificate and authorization from that authority. Rules for individual travellers are not the same as requirements for yacht stores or vessel-wide quarantine. Declare food, pets, plants and fishing equipment aboard and confirm the requirements that apply to the vessel with customs and the Food and Veterinary Authority before arrival.

Iceland Customs says firearms, ammunition and explosives generally require permission from the National Commissioner of Police; eligible holders of a European firearms pass may qualify for an exception during a short visit. Drugs, uncooked meat, certain weapons and particular knives are prohibited or restricted. The cited pages mainly cover import restrictions and traveller guidance, not a yacht-specific item list. Before departure, confirm and declare firearms, ammunition, medicines or other controlled items aboard in writing with Iceland Customs and the police.

Arrival procedures

Customs supervises vessels, people and goods on arrival and departure. A large port that receives commercial vessels will not necessarily be able to receive and clear a small yacht immediately; contact the port in advance.
