French Southern Territories

The French Southern and Antarctic Lands (TAAF) are not ordinary port destinations freely accessible to yachts. Yacht anchoring and landings around Crozet, Kerguelen, Saint Paul and Amsterdam are strictly restricted. Submit a reasoned application to the TAAF Senior Administrator for the specific islands, voyage and activities. Approval is not automatic. Adélie Land in Antarctica has separate Antarctic environmental protection rules.

TAAF consists of widely separated areas and yacht visits cannot be planned from an ordinary port list. Official information strictly restricts yacht anchoring and landings around Crozet, Kerguelen, Saint Paul and Amsterdam. Exceptional, well-justified applications may be made to the Senior Administrator. Before departure, verify permission, available anchorages and current restrictions with TAAF for the specific area and site.

Before approaching any TAAF island, confirm authorisation for the voyage, anchoring and landing with the Senior Administrator and submit a reasoned application. Réunion or mainland French clearance is not TAAF access permission. Foreign nationals must also check TAAF-specific visa/entry requirements. Do not enter protected areas on an ordinary port itinerary without written permission.

Personal entry follows TAAF's special regime. Official visitor information requires foreign nationals to obtain the applicable visa/permission in advance. Administrative visit, vessel anchoring and landing permissions are separate. Do not assume mainland French or Schengen visas automatically authorise TAAF entry. Vessel customs

Vessel-document reminder: prepare registration/flag documents, ownership evidence or owner authorisation, insurance, previous-port clearance and an onboard inventory. Ask French Southern Territories customs whether temporary admission, leaving the vessel, repairs, crew changes, sale or commercial conversion need additional formalities. No duty-free period or guarantee conditions applying to all foreign vessels have been verified. Mooring permission is not customs release.

EU territorial limitation: The European Commission lists France's other overseas territories outside EU territory, customs and VAT regimes. French administrative links do not make this an EU yacht temporary-import area. Complete local customs procedures separately.

TAAF's official biosecurity guide requires preventing seeds, soil, plant remains, insects and other introduced organisms from reaching fragile island ecosystems, with strict restrictions or permits for animals, plants, food and contaminated equipment. It mainly covers protected territories and personal activities, not a published uniform vessel quarantine checklist for every yacht. Before authorised access, declare food, pets, plants and equipment to TAAF and follow inspection/disinfection instructions.

The principal TAAF restrictions concern protected-area access and introduced-organism risks. Do not introduce or land animals, plants, seeds, soil or potentially contaminated equipment without express permission. Declare firearms, medicines and other special goods with the visit application and follow written authority conditions. No uniform special-goods list for all yachts was found. Confirm each item before obtaining visit approval.
