Scope

Vessel entry to French Polynesia requires separate maritime, customs, immigration and biosecurity formalities under local regimes.

Scope reminder: Entry/visa, customs/tax territory and biosecurity rules may differ from European mainland France. Mainland French EES, Schengen short-stay or EU vessel temporary-import provisions do not automatically apply.

DPAM lists island ports for initial yacht formalities and requires entry through an authorised first-call point. The list does not mean every location can complete every agency's checks. Tahiti/Moorea border checks are arranged through the responsible Faa'a airport authorities, while official biosecurity information identifies Papeete as the formal vessel biosecurity entry point. Outer islands may offer only certain customs or immigration formalities. Confirm each requirement for the actual first call with DPAM, customs and biosecurity.

Before visiting French Polynesia, vessels must submit advance declarations through official channels and arrange relevant mooring formalities. Official inspection procedures require previous-port outward clearance and, depending on vessel/goods, may require import permits, treatment certificates and food, plant or animal information. Submit voyage-specific materials through the official ESCALES/Mes-Démarches portals and follow case-specific authority requirements.

Each person must check applicable French Polynesian passports, visas and personal stay permission according to nationality and plans. DPAM requires passports valid for at least 6 months after intended departure. Obtain required visas before sailing. Vessel customs temporary admission is not the crew's immigration stay period.

Yacht temporary admission (admission temporaire): French Polynesian Customs states that new declaration procedures apply from September 1, 2026. Qualifying non-resident private non-commercial yachts under 24 m have continuous 12-month temporary admission; those over 24 m have 36 months. Eligibility also depends on registration, owner/user residence and chartering. Overstays, commercial use or failed conditions may cause taxes to become due.

Official-page conflict: DPAM's old page still shows a 24-month rule. Follow the new customs page and date-appropriate declaration form, confirming vessel-specific applicability and dates before arrival. French administrative status does not make the local regime mainland French/EU law.

Vessels must report in advance and undergo French Polynesian biosecurity inspection, potentially covering the vessel, food, plants, animals, animal products and waste. Do not land regulated food, plants or animals without permission. Handle pets, plant products and contaminated equipment as instructed. Declare food, plants, seeds, animals, animal products, timber and controlled items ahead under local biosecurity/customs rules and do not land them before approval. Pet, animal and plant imports may need advance permits and inspections. Confirm firearms, ammunition, controlled medicines and endangered-species products separately with customs and competent authorities for permits, declarations and onboard custody.

Submit yacht declarations through official DUP/ESCALES channels before arrival and complete DPAM's Maritime Declaration of Health at least 48 hours ahead. First call must be at a location authorised for entry formalities. Faa'a airport authorities handle Tahiti/Moorea border checks; Papeete is the formal vessel biosecurity entry point. Some outer islands provide certain customs or immigration formalities, not necessarily every check. Verify authorities, berths and appointments for the actual first island.
