Private pleasure-craft entry to Finland depends on whether the route crosses the Schengen external border, vessel customs status and personal nationalities. External-border arrivals must use Finnish Border Guard-approved crossings. Customs goods declarations and personal border checks are separate. Åland has a special customs/tax status. Confirm route-specific requirements with Finnish Customs and the Border Guard.

Arrivals from outside Schengen must undergo checks at a crossing authorised for external-border controls. A marina alone does not establish border-crossing status. Border Guard boating guidance and crossing opening information may change. Before sailing, confirm private-yacht acceptance, hours, reporting and current restrictions with the intended border station. The Finnish Sailing and Boating Federation's 2022 guide is background only; old port lists do not prove current opening.

For arrivals from outside Schengen, contact the Border Guard before departure about designated crossings, opening hours and vessel/personnel reporting. Prepare vessel name, flag, registration, ETA, previous port and all crew/passenger passport and visa details. No uniform advance hour count for all yachts was verified. Do not copy old guides or other countries' 24/48-hour deadlines.

Immigration

The Finnish Sailing and Boating Federation guide distinguishes internal Schengen routes from external-border arrivals, which must follow official channels to authorised checkpoints.

Important 2026 update | European Entry/Exit System (EES): Since April 10, 2026, EES has been fully operational at the external border crossings of the 29 participating countries. Eligible non-EU short-stay travellers may need to register passport details, facial images/fingerprints and entry/exit times. Exemptions apply; applicability cannot be determined solely by the vessel's flag. Private yachts must confirm processing arrangements with the actual receiving border port; this does not mean every domestic port can provide clearance.

ETIAS status (November 3, 2026): The official EU website states that it is not yet operational and applications are not being accepted. It is not a travel authorisation currently required for purchase. Recheck once implementation dates are announced.

EU vessel customs rules apply in Finland; verify Åland's special tax area separately. Qualifying non-EU-registered private yachts may normally use temporary admission for up to 18 months within the EU customs territory if owner/user and use conditions are met. This is a vessel customs regime, not a crew visa or residence period. Commercial use, sale, user residence, late re-export and the vessel's actual tax area may change treatment. Confirm flag and tax circumstances with Finnish Customs.

Food, plants and pets from outside the EU must meet Finnish and EU health rules. The Finnish Food Authority states that non-EU meat and dairy are normally prohibited or strictly restricted, with exceptions for some products and origins. Many plants, seeds and cut flowers need phytosanitary documents. Dogs, cats and ferrets require identification chips, rabies compliance and health documents. Check official rules by origin, species and product before departure. Do not take controlled goods or pets ashore before authorisation.

Firearms, ammunition, medicines, endangered-species products, pyrotechnic signals and other controlled goods may require declarations, permits or special transport conditions. Before carriage, check with Finnish Customs and relevant authorities by category, origin and purpose. General traveller allowances do not establish permission to retain goods aboard or use them ashore.

External-border arrivals must undergo personal checks at designated crossings under Finnish Border Guard instructions. Customs separately handles onboard goods/declarations. Before arrival, confirm appointments, onboard processing and current opening hours with the station. Authorised crossings and hours may change. Individual ports arrange ordinary marina bookings, services and charges.

No uniform nationwide private-yacht entry/exit clearance total was found in this review. Border checks, visas, customs services, berths, pilotage, waste and agents may have separate rules or port tariffs. Obtain current charges from the border station, customs and receiving port before departure. Before leaving, confirm personal checks where applicable, goods declarations, port release and next-port requirements.
