Explore arrival and departure guidance for private recreational vessels. Confirm current requirements with the receiving authorities before sailing.

Overview

Official source checked Checked · 2026-11-04

Private-yacht entry to Ecuador involves national maritime authority DIRNEA and harbourmasters, customs authority SENAE and immigration. Galápagos visits also involve the Galápagos National Park Directorate, island Governing Council and biosecurity agency. Foreign-flag vessels undertaking tourism, recreational, sporting or related activities in Ecuadorian waters should first check DIRNEA's technical foreign-vessel entry rules. Galápagos requires separate permission. Agency procedures and scopes differ; confirm with the destination port and relevant bodies before sailing.

Ports of entry and exit

Ecuador's Organic Law on Navigation, Maritime Safety and Security lists coastal harbourmaster offices including Guayaquil, Puerto Bolívar, Manta, Esmeraldas and Posorja, and Galápagos offices at Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, Puerto Ayora, Seymour (Baltra) and General Villamil. These are jurisdiction/office locations, not confirmation that every site accepts international entry by foreign private yachts. Before proceeding, confirm designated entry status, current services and agent requirements with the local Capitanía, DIRNEA and SENAE.

Pre-arrival reporting

Official source linked Checked · 2026-11-04

Ecuador's maritime authorities use SIGMAP for international vessel arrivals and departures (arribos y zarpes). DIRNEA's published foreign-flag rules cover research, cultural, tourism, recreational, sporting and related activities. For Galápagos, the National Park Directorate requires private non-commercial vessels to contact a locally registered ship agent before arrival to assist with authority procedures. No uniform advance notice in hours applicable to all ordinary private yachts in transit was confirmed publicly. Contact the harbourmaster/agent early about ETA reports, documents, permissions and advance inspections. Do not apply commercial-vessel or air-passenger deadlines.

Immigration

Official source checked Checked · 2026-11-04

Everyone aboard must meet Ecuadorian immigration requirements and enter through an official immigration checkpoint. Published government traveller requirements normally include valid travel documents. Entry guidance generally requires passport validity of at least six months; citizens of some South American countries may use valid identity documents as prescribed. Visas depend on nationality and current lists; check current Foreign Ministry information. The master should confirm crew/passenger lists, passport details, entry/exit records and onboard private-yacht inspection methods with port and immigration authorities. Air-entry pages do not constitute a complete maritime crew clearance checklist.

Vessel customs

Official source linked Checked · 2026-11-04

SENAE includes tourists' private yachts, sailing vessels and catamarans in the special customs regime for private tourist transport. Entry eligibility, guarantees/declaration documents and periods are determined by entry customs according to vessel and visitor circumstances. SENAE's public explanation permits qualifying private maritime tourist transport to apply for a stay of up to one year. This is not automatic, and departure or change of customs regime must be completed as prescribed. Maritime entry and customs temporary admission are separate. Confirm current procedures, authorised period, guarantees, stores declarations and departure closure with SENAE before arrival. Do not rely solely on old copies of regulations.

Biosecurity

Official source linked Checked · 2026-11-04

Biosecurity differs between mainland Ecuador and Galápagos. The National Park Directorate states that ABG biosecurity inspectors arrange private-vessel inspections through the ship agent on arrival to prevent introduced species. Mainland pets and animal/plant products are also controlled by Agrocalidad. Its pet page mainly describes air arrivals and is not a maritime procedure for yacht pets. Before departure, confirm pet health certificates, food/plant/animal-product declarations, vessel cleaning/disinfection and waste/sewage handling with Agrocalidad and the destination. Prepare Galápagos inspections in advance as the agent and Park Directorate require.

Restricted items

Official source linked Checked · 2026-11-04

Weapons, ammunition, explosives, hazardous chemicals and controlled medicines must not be treated as ordinary baggage or onboard supplies. SENAE firearm import requirements require declarations under the applicable customs regime and competent-authority permission/documents. These commercial import rules do not authorise private-yacht firearm entry. Food, plants, animal products and protected species may need quarantine, environmental or CITES permits. Do not bring firearms, ammunition, narcotics or restricted biological products into Ecuador without express written authorisation from customs, defence/weapons authorities and quarantine bodies. Authorities must still confirm private-yacht declaration methods.

Port procedures

Official source linked Checked · 2026-11-04

DIRNEA's SIGMAP handles vessel arrival and departure. Its published yacht reception procedure requires the latest zarpe, navigation certificate (patente de navegación) and ship's log. If outward clearance came from another jurisdiction, applicable fees must also be paid as directed. Foreign-flag vessels must follow entry rules for their activity type and complete reception with the destination harbourmaster. Contact the local Capitanía beforehand to confirm international-yacht acceptance, ETA reporting, inspection arrangements, hours, agents and current documents. Galápagos requires a locally registered agent and may require National Park permission and environmental inspections.

Fees and departure

Official source linked Checked · 2026-11-04

Ecuador's maritime authority publishes US-dollar service tariffs based on service, vessel activity, registered gross tonnage and other factors. Published regulations allow annual consumer-price-index adjustments, so older amounts may be outdated. Galápagos has separate protected-area entry charges; check the National Park Directorate's latest announcement for applicability and amounts. Before departure, confirm outward permission, maritime fees, agency/marina charges, customs temporary-admission closure and immigration exit through DIRNEA/SIGMAP and the harbourmaster. No uniform total for all private yachts could be confirmed.
