Vue d’ensemble
Scope
This entry provides arrival and departure preparation information for private, non-commercial pleasure craft visiting Christmas Island. Vessel, immigration, goods and island-access formalities may be handled by different authorities. Any third-party experience mentioned here should be checked against the vessel's flag, each person's nationality, purpose and route. Unconfirmed matters do not imply exemptions.
Cross-territory reminder: Voyages to or from mainland Australia may still require separate declarations across customs and biosecurity boundaries. DAFF specifically requires non-commercial vessels travelling between the mainland and Christmas, Cocos or Norfolk Island to check reporting requirements separately.

Yacht entry location
The official visiting-yacht location on Christmas Island is Flying Fish Cove. The Department of Infrastructure states that visitor moorings are provided. Use an available designated mooring, fly the yellow quarantine flag and avoid anchoring in the cove to prevent coral damage. Australia's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) lists Christmas Island as a first point of entry (FPOE) for non-commercial yachts. The actual authorised arrival port is the one specified in the Biosecurity Status Document issued after submission of the DAFF pre-arrival report. Complete biosecurity/quarantine, customs and immigration clearance before going ashore.

Déclaration préalable à l’arrivée
Pre-arrival declarations
For yachts arriving at Christmas Island from overseas, the master must notify Australian Border Force (ABF) of expected arrival, normally at least 96 hours ahead. Shorter voyages use ABF's shorter deadlines: 72 hours' notice for a 72–96-hour voyage, 48 hours for 48–72 hours, 24 hours for 24–48 hours, and 12 hours for voyages under 24 hours. Report vessel name, country and port of registration, intended first arrival port, ETA, recent ports visited, and every person's name, date of birth, nationality and passport number; also report illness, animals, firearms and similar matters. Separately submit the biosecurity pre-arrival report electronically through DAFF's non-commercial vessel PAR web system under current rules, between 90 days and 12 hours before expected arrival at the first Australian port. Submit a separate PAR for every voyage between mainland Australia and external territories such as Christmas Island. Update changed plans promptly and arrive at the BSD-designated location. Local Christmas Island guidance also requires contacting ABF before or on arrival, using designated moorings and flying the yellow quarantine flag. This local contact does not replace timely federal ABF and DAFF reports.

Immigration
Immigration and inter-island voyages
Christmas Island is an Australian external territory. The Australian Government states that travel from mainland Australia requires no passport or visa, but each passenger, including children, must show photographic identification. Arrivals from outside Australia follow normal Australian customs and immigration procedures, require passports and may require visas. ABF also states that vessel voyages between Christmas Island and mainland Australia are treated as not leaving Australia for immigration purposes. Non-citizens must ensure their Australian visa covers the entire stay and inter-island voyage.

Vessel customs clearance
Australian Border Force states that movements into and out of Christmas Island are international movements for customs purposes. Vessels, persons and goods require customs clearance on arrival and departure. ABF and Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) clearance also applies to yachts arriving at or leaving Christmas Island.

Quarantaine et biosécurité
Biosecurity reporting
Pleasure craft arriving in Australian territory must submit a written pre-arrival report through DAFF's online PAR portal between 90 days and at least 12 hours before ETA. Additional separate PARs are required for Christmas Island visits and voyages between Christmas Island and mainland Australia or other specified external territories. Proceed to the first point of entry designated in the PAR and Biosecurity Status Document (BSD), and do not allow disembarkation or unloading until authorised. Follow the BSD instructions for the particular voyage.

Articles interdits ou réglementés
Declarable and restricted items
DAFF requires the PAR to disclose biosecurity risks including onboard cargo, fresh goods, plants, animals, insects and waste. Check the official BICON database to establish whether goods may enter and need permits. DAFF states that goods such as live animals presenting pest or disease risks must not be imported without authorisation. This is not a complete prohibited/restricted-items list.

Christmas Island yacht arrival procedure
Official territory guidance directs yachts to Flying Fish Cove, to contact Christmas Island ABF before or on arrival, moor as instructed and fly the yellow quarantine flag. Avoid anchoring in the cove to protect coral. Complete quarantine, customs and immigration before passengers leave the vessel. Parks Australia also states that the harbourmaster should be contacted on VHF 16 before arrival for mooring instructions.

Frais et départ
Complete Australian Border Force (ABF) clearance on departure. ABF states it charges no ordinary clearance fee, but departing passengers may owe the Passenger Movement Charge of AUD 70 per person, with children under 12 exempt. Its guidance for Christmas, Cocos and Norfolk Islands also states that voyages between these islands and mainland Australia are treated as not leaving Australia for immigration purposes but as international movements for customs purposes, so crew and goods still require customs clearance on arrival and departure. Public guidance does not expressly detail how the passenger charge applies to Christmas Island private-yacht departures. DAFF also provides vessel biosecurity inspections on a cost-recovery basis, with fees depending on actual inspection services. Before leaving, confirm passenger-charge applicability, inspection/service fees and payment methods with ABF Christmas Island and DAFF.
