Scope

The Canary Islands are part of Spain and are subject to Spanish and Schengen border controls. Spain's State Ports Authority states that ports of general interest have passenger border checks; non-EU travellers entering or leaving Schengen from outside the area must undergo border checks. Confirm whether a particular port handles yacht entry and its procedures with the intended port and local authorities.

The Canary Islands also have special plant-health rules. Movements of plants and plant products between the islands and mainland Spain or other European areas may also be restricted. Requirements for crew, vessels and goods may vary with origin, port of call and circumstances; check before departure.

The Canary Islands are part of Spain. Foreign yachts should complete entry formalities at a port with the necessary border-check and customs facilities; not every marina is automatically authorised for clearance. Spain's port system includes passenger border-check facilities, and the Tenerife Port Authority's port inspection centre includes customs and health inspection services. Before departure, ask the intended port authority/harbourmaster whether it accepts arrivals on this route and can perform the required inspections. When arriving from outside Schengen, confirm that Schengen external-border checks can be completed there. Public official information does not provide a complete list of designated Canary Islands entry ports applicable to all private yachts.

No uniform pre-arrival reporting deadline applicable to every private yacht arriving in the Canary Islands was found. Spain's Royal Decree 186/2023 normally exempts pleasure craft that are non-commercial and have no professional crew from general vessel dispatch formalities, subject to statutory exceptions. Where express entry authorisation is legally required, for example for certain dangerous goods, vessel safety/environmental issues or requests for refuge, applications normally must be submitted at least 48 hours before arrival. This is not a general 48-hour reporting deadline for all private yachts. Separately confirm berthing, declarations and immigration arrangements with the port authority/harbourmaster, customs and border authorities. Commercial operations or chartering require checks for additional permissions.

Immigration

Personnel-check reminder: confirm with the receiving authorities in the Canary Islands, for every person, passport validity, nationality-based visa or prior-permission requirements, eligibility to arrive by sea, permitted stay dates, and arrangements for crew changes and leaving the vessel. Air-arrival visas, cruise-group concessions or a travel account concerning one nationality cannot be extended to a visa exemption for everyone on a private yacht. Vessel stay and personal residence permissions must be assessed separately. This section makes no blanket visa-free assurance.

Important 2026 update | European Entry/Exit System (EES): Since April 10, 2026, EES has been fully operational at the external border crossings of the 29 participating countries. Eligible non-EU short-stay travellers may need to register passport details, facial images/fingerprints and entry/exit times. Exemptions apply; applicability cannot be determined solely by the vessel's flag. Private yachts must confirm processing arrangements with the actual receiving border port; this does not mean every domestic port can provide clearance.

ETIAS status (November 3, 2026): The official EU website states that it is not yet operational and applications are not being accepted. It is not a travel authorisation currently required for purchase. Recheck once implementation dates are announced.

Vessel customs

Vessel-document reminder: prepare registration/flag documents, proof of ownership or the owner's authorisation, insurance, previous-port clearance and an inventory of goods aboard. Ask Canary Islands customs whether temporary admission, leaving the vessel, repairs, crew changes, sale or conversion to commercial use require additional formalities. No duty-free period or guarantee conditions applicable to all foreign vessels have been verified. A mooring permit must not be treated as customs release.

EU vessel Temporary Admission (separate from personal permitted stays): Qualifying private yachts registered outside the EU and used mainly by eligible residents outside the EU can normally be used temporarily within the EU customs territory for 18 months, with customs duty/import VAT temporarily relieved. Taxes may become due if conditions are not met, the vessel is used commercially or it is not re-exported on time. This is not an 18-month personal visa.

Assess EU customs territory and VAT territory separately: The Canary Islands are within the EU customs territory but outside the territorial scope of the EU VAT Directive. Mainland Spanish VAT charging practices cannot simply be applied. Confirm yacht temporary admission, declarations at other EU ports and local taxes, including Canary Islands local taxes, separately with customs.

Plants and plant products

The Canary Islands Government states that special plant-health rules apply between the islands and mainland Spain or other European areas. Certain plants, plant products and other regulated items are prohibited. Others require declaration to destination customs and a phytosanitary certificate issued by the competent authority at origin, and may require border inspection. Personal use alone does not establish an exemption from inspection.

Pets and other animals

Pets entering Spain from outside the EU must arrive through a designated travellers' entry point and be declared. Certificate, identification and quarantine requirements vary by species and departure location. Check the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture's latest requirements before departure and ask the intended port whether it is an appropriate designated entry point.

Controlled items

Spanish Customs requires travellers to declare restricted or prohibited goods. Travellers from outside the EU carrying declarable goods should use the customs red channel. Firearms require permission and are controlled in Spain; conditions vary by firearm category and origin. Do not bring firearms or ammunition aboard and only then ask about formalities. Before departure, confirm prior permissions, declarations and transport requirements with the Spanish Civil Guard's Weapons and Explosives department and customs.

Plants, animals and related products are also subject to quarantine and species-protection rules; see the quarantine and biosecurity section of this guide.

The Canary Islands are Spanish territory and follow Spanish maritime and border rules, but have a special tax status: they remain within the EU customs territory while outside the EU VAT/excise territory, and IGIC applies locally. Complete personal border entry and customs declarations separately according to route, nationality and goods. Goods movements between the islands and mainland Spain/the Balearics may involve tax or customs formalities. Do not treat commercial-goods customs procedures as a uniform private-yacht pre-arrival requirement. Confirm goods and tax matters with the Spanish Tax Agency/customs and arrival port authority.

Canary Islands port charges depend on the port operator, vessel category, stay and services used. Puertos Canarios' published 2026 tariffs apply only to ports under its direct management. Vessel entry/stay dues (T1) depend on navigation category and duration; pleasure-craft berthing/mooring charges (T7) are calculated daily using length, beam and mooring arrangement, with minimum charges. The schedule is not a uniform entry/departure clearance fee and may not apply to concession-operated ports or other port authorities. Confirm applicable tariffs and any additional formalities fees with the specific port before departure.
