Scope

The British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT, Chagos Archipelago) is not a tourist destination; access is strictly controlled. Yachts may apply to anchor at designated outer-island locations as a safe stop while crossing the Indian Ocean. Diego Garcia is a military area and is off limits to ordinary visitors. All visitors must obtain prior permission from the BIOT Administration; approval is not guaranteed.

Ports and designated anchorages

Public information does not list a seaport or port of entry where ordinary yachts can complete routine clearance. A permit allows anchoring only at the approved outer-island locations specified in that permit; these are not general ports or entry points that may be chosen freely. Entry or anchoring without permission is prohibited.

Apply before arrival

All visitors must apply in advance for an individual entry permit. Vessels must also apply for a visitor vessel-anchoring permit. The Administration recommends applying at least 8 weeks ahead; approval is not guaranteed. Submit the application form, passport copies for everyone (passports must be valid for at least 6 months after the planned entry date), and insurance documents in English. Insurance must include at least US$100,000 in medical evacuation cover per person and vessel-wreck recovery, cleanup, and removal cover applicable to Chagos (BIOT). If approved, pay by the method specified; the permit is issued only after payment is received.

Vessel permission and customs scope

A vessel visit requires an advance visitor vessel-anchoring permit. This BIOT-specific permit authorises the approved vessel to anchor at designated outer-island locations; it is not ordinary port clearance. The Administration's public application page does not describe a separate yacht customs declaration or arrival-clearance process and does not list general port customs facilities. Do not infer that no declaration is needed; ask the Administration directly about any special arrival arrangements.

Biosecurity

The Administration's guidance requires scrubbing the hull before arrival, inspecting supply containers, and washing fruit and vegetables. Do not take living organisms or live plants ashore. Discharge bilge water or ballast water offshore before entering BIOT waters. Before going ashore, inspect clothing, equipment, and small inflatable craft to avoid carrying seeds, insects, or other organisms. Do not take fresh food ashore. Pets must remain aboard. Take all rubbish away when leaving.

Prohibited items and activity restrictions

Unless a special exemption has been granted in advance, firearms and spear guns must not be carried aboard. Pets must not leave the vessel. Diving equipment and drones must be stowed and may not be used in BIOT waters. Diving, commercial activity, and collecting plants, animals, or wildlife are prohibited. Handline fishing is allowed only for personal consumption, up to no more than three days' needs; fish may not be sold or used for profit, and catches must be recorded. Observe the strict nature-reserve rules and the exclusion zone around Diego Garcia. The official website does not provide a complete list of restricted personal goods.

AIS and arrival/departure reporting

For a permitted vessel, AIS must remain operational and switched on while approaching and within the BIOT Maritime Zone (the 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone) and territorial waters. If it fails, the master must immediately contact the BIOT patrol vessel/fisheries protection officer or the Administration and make every effort to restore AIS. Report to the VVCO/BIOT Patrol Vessel (BPV) when entering the Maritime Zone, arriving at the approved anchorage, leaving the anchorage, and leaving the Maritime Zone. Anchor only at locations specified in the permit.

Fees and departure reports

The Administration currently lists a £100 processing fee for an entry-permit application. International bank transfers incur an additional £7 or the receiving bank's fees. Vessel anchoring permits cost £250–£5,000 per week depending on yacht length; apply for 1–4 weeks, with a maximum of 28 days and no extension. Payment instructions are provided only after approval, and the permit is issued only after funds are received. No separate departure fee is listed on the website. Report when leaving the anchorage and Maritime Zone. Within 28 days of departure, submit the fishing log, including a nil return if there was no catch.
