Überblick
Belgium is in the Schengen Area. Pleasure craft arriving from or departing for a country outside Schengen must follow Belgium's maritime border reporting requirements. Arrivals and departures must use designated maritime border crossing points and be reported as required to the Maritime and River Police. Vessel import/tax formalities and crew immigration permission are separate procedures.

Ein- und Ausklarierungshäfen
The Belgian Federal Police lists these maritime border crossing points: Antwerp; Blankenberge (via Zeebrugge); Ghent; Nieuwpoort (via Ostend); Ostend; and Zeebrugge. Arrivals from outside the Schengen Area must be handled during port opening hours. Calling at a location that is not a border crossing point is allowed only in special circumstances and requires prior contact with the port authority.

Voranmeldung
The Federal Police provides an online pleasure-craft declaration platform for submitting details to the Maritime and River Police. The official requirement is to provide vessel technical details and the names of people aboard; the current page does not specify one advance-notice period for all yachts. Before departure, use the official platform and contact the intended port to confirm opening hours, notice deadlines, and document format.

Einreisebestimmungen
Entry for people
For each person, confirm with the receiving authority in Belgium passport validity, visa or prior-authorisation requirements for their nationality, eligibility to arrive by sea, permitted stay, and arrangements for crew changes or leaving the vessel. An airport visa on arrival, group cruise-ship concession, or one traveller's account must not be generalised into visa-free entry for everyone on a private yacht. Vessel stay and personal immigration stay are assessed separately. No general visa-free promise is made here.
Important 2026 update | European Entry/Exit System (EES): Since 10 April 2026, EES has been fully operational at the external border crossing points of the 29 countries using the system. Eligible non-EU short-stay travellers may need to register passport details, facial image/fingerprints, and entry and exit times. Exemptions apply, and eligibility cannot be determined from the vessel's flag alone. For a private-yacht arrival, confirm the process with the actual border port receiving the vessel. This does not mean every national port can provide direct clearance.
ETIAS status (3 November 2026): The EU says ETIAS is not yet operational and is not accepting applications. It is not a travel authorisation that must currently be purchased. Check again once an implementation date is announced.

Zollverfahren für das Schiff
Have vessel registration/flag documents, proof of ownership or authorisation, insurance, previous-port clearance, and an inventory of items aboard ready. Ask Belgian Customs whether declaration or temporary admission is required. Qualifying privately used vessels registered outside the EU may be eligible under EU temporary-admission rules, generally for up to 18 months, but eligibility, use, and re-export conditions are strict. This period concerns the vessel's customs status, not people's permitted stay.

Quarantäne und Biosicherheit
Belgium applies EU animal, plant, and food health rules. Dogs, cats, and ferrets arriving from a non-EU country generally need a microchip, rabies vaccination, and the applicable animal health certificate/serology test; requirements vary by origin and circumstances. Meat, dairy, plants, and other animal products are subject to additional restrictions. Do not take pets, food, plants, or rubbish ashore until you have checked the current requirements of Belgium's Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain for the origin and item concerned.

Verbotene und beschränkte Gegenstände
Firearms, firearm parts, and ammunition are subject to regional permits and customs import/transit restrictions in Belgium. Do not rely solely on a home-country firearms licence to take them ashore or clear them through Customs. Before departure, obtain written confirmation from the competent permit authority in the destination region and Belgian Customs about temporary carriage, storage aboard, declaration, and re-export.

Hafenformalitäten
Pleasure craft arriving from outside the Schengen Area must report without delay for border checks by the Maritime and River Police and provide vessel technical details and a list of people aboard. Keep an authenticated copy of the declaration aboard while sailing in Schengen territorial waters. When sailing to a destination outside Schengen, report to the Maritime and River Police at the departure port and return the relevant documents. Report crew joining or leaving and changes to vessel or passenger details as directed in the official guidance.

Gebühren und Ausreise
The Federal Police declaration page describes the border-reporting process but does not list a uniform yacht-clearance fee. Port, berth, agent, and specific service charges may be separate; confirm current amounts directly with the harbour office/marina and agent. Before departure, submit the required documents to the Maritime and River Police at the departure port.
