Scope

This entry provides arrival and departure preparation information for private, non-commercial pleasure craft visiting the Azores. Different authorities may handle the vessel, people, goods, and island visits. Third-party accounts mentioned here should be checked against the vessel's flag, each person's nationality, intended use, and itinerary. Unconfirmed matters are not exemptions.

Verification status: To be confirmed. This section has no independently verified local official source. It is pre-voyage guidance and should not be treated as a legal authorisation, deadline, or fee schedule.

Azores entry and yacht ports

Each island has marinas managed or listed by Portos dos Açores; its official directory can be used to find berth and contact information. The Portuguese Tax and Customs Authority separately lists customs offices at Ponta Delgada and at Praia (Graciosa), Velas (São Jorge), Lajes (Flores), and São Roque (Pico), among others. A list of customs offices is not a list of ports where yachts are authorised to complete border entry, and a yacht marina does not automatically provide customs or immigration services. Before departure, confirm acceptance, border formalities, and opening arrangements for the day with the local harbour master (Capitania) and Customs at the intended port. The master may lawfully restrict or prohibit entry to, or berthing at, a particular port.

Advance notice

Preparation advice: send the receiving port or agent the vessel name, flag, registration number, dimensions and draft, previous port, ETA, next port, crew and passenger list, and contact details. Ask them to confirm the reporting channel, deadline, and acknowledgement. No uniform number of hours has been confirmed; do not apply another country's 24- or 48-hour rule automatically. Contact them again if the ETA or list changes.

Einreisebestimmungen

Entry for people

For each person, confirm with the receiving authority in the Azores passport validity, visa or prior-authorisation requirements for their nationality, eligibility to arrive by sea, permitted stay, and arrangements for crew changes or leaving the vessel. An airport visa on arrival, group cruise-ship concession, or one traveller's account must not be generalised into visa-free entry for everyone on a private yacht. Vessel stay and personal immigration stay are assessed separately. No general visa-free promise is made here.

Important 2026 update | European Entry/Exit System (EES): Since 10 April 2026, EES has been fully operational at the external border crossing points of the 29 countries using the system. Eligible non-EU short-stay travellers may need to register passport details, facial image/fingerprints, and entry and exit times. Exemptions apply, and eligibility cannot be determined from the vessel's flag alone. For a private-yacht arrival, confirm the process with the actual border port receiving the vessel. This does not mean that every national port can provide direct clearance.

ETIAS status (3 November 2026): The EU says ETIAS is not yet operational and is not accepting applications. It is not a travel authorisation that must currently be purchased. Check again once an implementation date is announced.

Vessel customs

Preparation advice: have registration/flag documents, proof of ownership or the owner's authorisation, insurance, previous-port clearance, and an inventory of items aboard ready. Ask Azores Customs whether temporary admission, keeping the vessel in port, repairs, crew changes, sale, or conversion to commercial use requires additional formalities. No duty-free period or security requirement applicable to every foreign vessel has been verified. Berthing permission is not customs clearance.

EU temporary admission for vessels (Temporary Admission; separate from people's permitted stay): A qualifying privately used yacht registered outside the EU and used mainly by a qualifying non-EU resident may generally be used temporarily within the EU customs territory for 18 months without customs duty/import VAT. Taxes may become due if the conditions are not met, the vessel is put to commercial use, or it is not re-exported by the deadline. This is not an 18-month visa.

EU territorial scope: The European Commission confirms that Portugal's Azores and Madeira are within both the EU customs and VAT territories. The vessel's specific temporary-import status, people's entry, and local maritime or port charges must still be assessed separately.

Quarantine and biosecurity

Preparation advice: before travelling to the Azores, list meat, dairy and eggs, fruit and vegetables, plant seeds, pets, live animals, and rubbish, and ask whether prior approval, health/vaccination certificates, inspection, sealing, or designated disposal is required. Do not take these items, animals, or vessel rubbish ashore without instructions from the receiving authority. No uniform pet-entry or food exemption has been confirmed in this section.

Prohibited and restricted items

For special items such as firearms and ammunition, spear guns, flares, drones, controlled medicines, antiques, wildlife products, or large amounts of cash, tell the relevant Azores authorities the type, quantity, and purpose before departure. Confirm declaration, advance authorisation, storage, and arrangements for reclaiming items on departure. The specific restricted-item list and cash threshold have not been verified; omission from this guide does not mean an item is permitted.

Arrival formalities

Arrival advice: as you approach the intended Azores port, use the confirmed contact details to obtain berthing or waiting instructions. Ask which formalities can be completed aboard and which require an in-person visit to an office. Arrange ordinary shore leave or onward travel only after health, immigration, customs, and port formalities are complete. Coordinate with on-duty staff before arriving outside normal hours. No uniform opening hours across the islands have been confirmed here.

Departure formalities and fees

No official rule has been found establishing a uniform departure-clearance fee for all private yachts in the Azores. Portos dos Açores' Portaria n.º 3/2026, published on 13 January 2026, sets charges for use of its marinas and recreational nautical facilities. Berthing charges depend on vessel category, length, time alongside, and applicable residence/tax conditions; waste management and other items may be charged separately. These are charges for marina use and services, not customs departure fees, and do not include immigration, agent, or other port-service charges. Before departure, confirm required departure declarations, current charges, and payment channels with the marina, harbour master, and Customs.
